E3 Adventure Vlog featuring Aris & Teejay

Thanks to our friend, Charles, some of us were able to go to E3!  I haven't been to E3 in probably 5 years and I think it has gotten way more amazing since then.

Check out this vlog of Aris, Teejay, and me running around and playing games =P

Old DragonBall Z parody

When I was young I was obsessed with DBZ.  It was probably the most frustration series to watch because one fight would last what seemed like 10 episodes.  In these 10 episodes there was 98% talking and facial reactions from characters.  Even though it was excruciating to sit through nonetheless I craved to know what happened since I invested so much time waiting and watching.

This DBZ parody is from the youtube channel WeeklyTubeShow2 ... There are some gems in there from DBZ and some other animes like Fist of the North Star where they dub the voices over.

What old cartoons did you watch as a kid?

Trick of the Week: JackKnife - Steve Terada

A Jackknife is a Martial Arts kick trick that involves executing a 540 kick followed by a spinning hook kick with the opposite leg before landing.

Jackknife is one of my favorite tricks.  It's a great balance of kick technique and difficulty.  I see a lot of trickers now a days using this to demonstrate that they can kick trick in addition to their acrobatic power moves in their trick vocabulary.

Tricking History (from my experience):

One of the first martial artists I saw execute a jackknife was one of my old coaches, David Douglas.  He call it a 540 hook kick.  Back in the mid 90's there weren't forums or message boards so tricks would come out slowly to the public. You had to be in the sport karate tournament scene to stay up to date with the lingo.  In 2000 through message boards like Bilang.com trickers started calling it a Jackknife.
Circa 1997 - As you can see David was very pro hook kick.
One of the main reasons why I focused years on training and analyzing them.

Shadow pics

Today I'm going to try out the Blogger iPhone app to post for the first time. It's very convenient to use your phone to blog on the go. I wish it had more options but what can you do :/

This week I was working on Chris Brown's new music video "Fine China" as a fight choreographer. We had a lot of downtime so we started taking pictures and thought these were pretty cool :)

All of them are unedited from my Canon S95.

Misunderstanding #Tricking

Here's a message I received on FB about a year and a half ago about reputable martial artists apparently talking badly about tricking/extreme forms that.  I decided to lend my thoughts on why Tricking gets hated on.  This is a repost from my FB notes (yea remember when people used that feature?)

"Hey Steve,
Sorry for the random message, just wanted you to know that (old school martial artist) is talking sh*t about 'you' over on his wall. He's basically using one of your youtube clips to bad talk Extreme Forms. Coming from someone in his position I find it really sad and hard to understand if I'm honest. Yet another sad case of ingnorance I guess?
Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to have the video removed.

Regards

Chris J."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hi Chris,
I think in general most "haters" of extreme forms/tricking haven't seen the evolution of sport karate tournaments and how tricking has also become its own entity. What people need to know in tournaments these type of divisions were full of forms made with the same movements as traditional forms. Why did all of this change?....Competition. This is the main reason why any of these moves have come to fruition. To edge out the competition one had to up the difficulty and innovate while making sure the judges understand what you were doing. Instead of doing a tornado kick you do a 540 when someone can do that they do a jackknife (540 hook kick) etc. Someone that hasn't seen this evolution would not be able to see or know its martial arts origins NOT gymnastics origins. Every tricker knows that the martial arts combat application isn't very high but if you think about it when you see martial arts fights in movies you don't really see effective martial arts application...it's choreography. That's what forms are.

I don't know (old school martial artist) but I believe that he is only looking at extreme forms and tricking from an outsiders perspective. You almost can't blame him for thinking in that way.

Thanks for the message! I don't own the video that that was posted so I can't take it down but I think its important to let the controversy of commenters ensue. It's just making tricking more well known. Hopefully one day people will read enough about it to understand. Feel free to post this if you like.

~Steve"

Welcome to my new Blog! BATTLE OF THE YEAR 3D!

Welcome to my new blog and Happy Superbowl Sunday!  I've been working really hard to get back to performance shape and trying to bounce back from all of my injuries/surgeries over the past year.  If you didn't know I had sustained cervical spine and ACL knee injuries at the end of 2011.

Last Thursday I went to a preview of the movie I worked on called "Battle of the Year: The Dream Team 3D".  I can say that I'm pretty proud of the film and excited for all of you to see it =). I've been getting a lot of questions asking, "When is it coming out?" or "Wasn't it supposed to be out in January?!". The release was pushed back to September 13, 2013 (USA) and I just found out that it will be opening in over 80 countries!!!
Worldwide Release Dates (check when it's playing in your country!)

PLEASE help and support the movie and me by liking and following the official social media accounts!  Any shoutout comments to me on these will be much appreciated ;)
